Protest:
Bird titles this section as, "The Silent Shout". I like that. I will never forget the first time I saw Goya’s,
The Third of May 1808. It was and still
is a powerful painting of protest and the atrocity of war. Bird focuses on two
of the greats Goya and Picasso and then at the end mentions art in the 60’s,
feminism and the Guerrilla Girls, yet he fills up most of the space with
Picasso’s, Guernica, instead of including an image of any of the last
mentioned. In my opinion, not cool. And protest art is not just about
propaganda and war.
I believe protest art comes
in many forms for many causes. I have many ideas for protest art and I use to
engage in one form known as performance punk rock. I use to write songs and
create music with my band. It wasn't just screaming and angst, it was juxtaposition
in lyrics and tempo, discordance with deep emotion and vise/versa. I feel like
many of the documentaries I have seen in the past few years are protest art and
artists such as JR, the French artist, does a form of protest with his large
scale images, they truly are, silent shouts. I will definitely do more protest art and I have an idea
concerning our treatment of the elderly and our treatment of our mentally ill.
The Russian, feminist punk rock group, Pussy Riot and their story of imprisionment was made into a documentary and played at this True/False film fest.
